How to sand spindles without power tools

In this video, I want to show you how I sanded the spindles on my outdoor bench so I could refinish it. I’m sure all of us gravitate to grabbing a power tool like a Dremel to make things easier but the truth is that a power sander can do more damage than good when working on delicate and intricate wooden spindles. The contours, ridges, and details in chair spindles, stair spindles, bench spindles, banisters, balusters, or spindle leg tables can be really tricky to sand with a powerful electrical sander. So I recommend trying to sand them by hand to minimize any potential damage. Plus some of us don’t have the funds to buy fancy power tools. You can start out by removing some of the old varnish, old stain, or old layers of paint with chemical stripper but eventually you will have to sand the spindles anyways.
