Today, it's a city in the far east of Germany on the border with Poland. Right there! The border crossing is located right in the city center, where the Old Town Bridge connects Görlitz in Germany with Zgorzelec in Poland. But you can probably guess from the names: It used to be a city on both banks of the Neisse River. For over a thousand years, until a border was drawn between it in 1945 after the end of World War II. That was exactly eighty years ago. So it's time for us to take a stroll through the history of this impressive city of Görlitz! This city tour will guide us through history, taking in Görlitz's sights. We'll walk through the old town, first along the ancient Via Regia. We'll cross the Untermarkt with its famous hall houses and climb up to the Kaisertrutz (Imperial Fortress) and then back past the synagogue to the Old Town Bridge – the symbol of today's European city of Görlitz Zgorzelec.
