L'alpinista bernese, conosciuto per le sue solitarie , ha il record di velocità stabilito sulle pareti nord dell'Eiger, Cervino e Grand Jorasses. Ha vinto in due occasioni il Piolet d'Or, massimo riconoscimento alpinistico.
