A LYRA VIOL PENTAMERON - Liam Byrne

This short film was made for Dartington International Summer School in July 2021, when I couldn't be there in person. The original plan for my time at ‪@DartingtonTrust‬ was to explore 17th-century domestic musical practice without putting on normal concerts, and this set of 5 pieces for solo lyra viol attempts to convey a bit of that vibe. Each piece is recorded in a single take in a different setting, using different microphone and camera setups, almost as a kind of etude in the practice of recording lyra viol music. The viol was made by Marc Soubeyran in 2012 and is a copy of the small John Rose bass in the Kessler collection. The strings are from Valentin Oelmüller at Pure Corde, and the bow is by Gerhard Landwehr.
