Why Don't You Walk on All Fours? Science Finally Has an Answer Virtually every large animal on Earth uses four legs to move around. Puppies, cats, lions, elephants, horses, bears, and even our closest relatives, chimpanzees and gorillas, walk on their hands and knees. And then there's you. Balanced on two feet, straight spine, arms swinging at your sides, walking around as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Why did evolution decide that a primate should ditch all four legs and balance on two? The answer came from a surprising place: wild chimpanzees in Guinea, West Africa. And it's much simpler and much deeper than any theory that existed before. In this video you will discover: It's food's fault: a study published in the journal Current Biology revealed that when food was scarce, wild chimpanzees began walking on two feet much more frequently. Because walking on two feet frees up their hands. And free hands mean carrying more food at once. Why the savannah changed everything: between 6 and 7 million years ago, the climate in Africa began to change. Forests diminished and savannas expanded. In this new environment, standing upright ceased to be an occasional strategy and became a constant and permanent advantage. The hands that changed history: when our ancestors permanently stood on two feet, their hands were freed forever. And permanently free hands can make tools, build shelters, light fires, write, paint, and play instruments. The same adaptation that began as a way to carry more fruit ended up being the starting point for practically everything humans have ever created. The price of bipedalism: walking on two feet has a huge cost. Back pain. Worn-out knees. A whole year to learn to walk, while horses walk hours after birth. Difficult and risky childbirth. All this is the price you pay for standing upright. Why other animals didn't do the same: some animals walk on two feet, but none developed the specific combination that humans developed. Two feet on the ground, a completely erect spine, and two completely free and functional hands at the same time.
