Learn to Paint! Watercolor Painting Demonstration of "Sydney In The Rain" The Harbour in Watercolour
I love this scene, as it has a simple structure, simple colour choices, and a large area of harbour to make doing a “wash” possible. I hope you enjoy watching me paint it. Location for this photograph, which I think is a fantastic spot for Plein Air painting. Larkin Street Lookout, Waverton NSWnext to Balls Head Reserve Bay, north of Sydney. REFERENCE PHOTO: You can view, and download the photo from my website, print it out, and use it as a guide if you'd like to paint along. Website: http://www.shirleypeters.com MY MATERIALS: Paper: Arches Cold Pressed (artist quality.) 31 x 41cm Pad (not loose) If this is beyond your budget, Canson make a cheaper paper. You won’t get such an even coating of wash, but it’s good to practice on. Paint: Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolours: very important to use rich colours. The cheaper “studio” or “students” quality are not as easy to mix dark shades. If you use these, the painting might look pale when it dries. Don’t blame yourself, blame the materials!! Brushes used in this video: Watercolour Mops, Really Fat Chinese Brush, Chisel Flat. I don’t have a favourite brand, as I buy brushes from many sources. My latest, favourite, mop brushes (fat, round with a point) are from this website: www.borntosketch.com That said, I have just ordered an expensive pair of large brushes from Escoda in Spain. I’ll do a materials video soon, and show you what they are like. BASIC COLOURS that I recommend for starting out are below. But feel free to choose any colours you like! There are no rules, and lots of beautiful shades to choose from! (The names I have used are mainly the Daniel Smith names. Different brands use different names, sometimes!) Two yellows, two reds, one purple, two blues, one green, two browns, one black. When I say “two” I mean a cool and warm version of each colour: Imagine a Lemon and an orange. Lemon yellow (cool) Permanent Orange (warm) Alizarin Crimson (cool) Perylene Red (warm) Carbozole Purple (mid) French Ultramarine (cool) Cerulean Blue (warmish) Sap Green (mid) Burnt Sienna (warm) Burnt Umber (cool) Black I buy the 15ml tubes and squeeze the paint into pans.
