Amid a social movement toward respect for diversity, "standard uniforms" that can be worn regardless of gender are becoming more common. Some schools are even changing their dress codes in response to the introduction of standard uniforms. We explored the growing trend toward "diversification" in the educational field. Oita City's municipal junior high schools will be introducing "standard uniforms" that take gender diversity and functionality into consideration starting this April. The standard uniforms are blazer-style and can be freely combined with slacks, skirts, and shorts, regardless of gender. The standard uniform blazers come in two types: a straight silhouette and a rounded silhouette. They are called "Type I" and "Type II" rather than "boys'" and "girls'." A boy who agreed to be interviewed chose "Type I," having started junior high school this spring. OBS interviewed 18 municipalities in the prefecture regarding the implementation of inclusive junior high school uniforms. Three municipalities have already introduced uniforms, nine have decided to introduce them, five are considering it, and Himeshima Village has yet to make a decision. Most municipalities are in the process of reviewing their uniforms. Until last December, Oji Junior High School's school rules prohibited the use of cold weather clothing other than designated school coats.
