There exists some controversy over the title of this short yet charming work: Vocalise-étude (pour voix graves) is the title enscribed on the original publication (consistent with the rest of the entries in A. L. Hettich's Répertoire moderne de vocalises series); however, catalogues of the composer's œuvre ascribe it Romance (presumably from his holograph?) and number it his opus 40. Owing to a failure to trace a recording of the original version for low voice and piano, a performance in which the vocal part is transcribed for alto saxophone is instead presented. Both instrumental parts remain faithfully intact.
