A pianist friend recently called me simply to "ask permission" to do one detail "out of line" while recording a sonata. And I got to thinking. What's going on in the world of performing musicians? We've been through the conservatory and competition system, literally trained to wait for evaluation from some kindly judge or boss. Musicians are frankly cowardly, afraid to speak up, afraid to show their creative will. But the truth is, there's no boss above them. No one will pat you on the back for stepping on your own. A stillborn, yet "correct" product doesn't provide the listener with the emotional anesthesia that draws people to art. True resonance only occurs when you're not afraid to do something wrong, but something uniquely yours. In this video, I recall the story of Rachmaninoff's Second Sonata from my student years and explain why I always encourage creative audacity.
