It serves as a primary center and is considered a recreational location.[2] The town is officially recognized as a salt and mud spa.[3] The town's history is closely linked to rock and potash salt mining. The first documented mention of Bad Salzdetfurth dates back to 1194. The town's current boundaries were created in 1974 through the merger of 12 surrounding communities. The nearest major cities are Hildesheim (about 11 km north), Salzgitter (about 24 km northeast), Hanover (39 km north) and Braunschweig (about 42 km northeast).
