Today, its natural beauty and vibrant tourism seem to gradually erase the traces of that dark period, offering visitors a vision of a nation firmly looking toward the future. Molded by its Mediterranean character, the country has seen the influence of all the great surrounding civilizations: the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Venetians, and first among them, the Illyrians – the direct ancestors of the Albanians.
