52 BC. Inside the hilltop fortress of Alesia, a Gallic army is trapped behind two rings of Roman siege walls built by Julius Caesar himself. Their leader is Vercingetorix, the man who united the tribes of Gaul against Rome for the first and only time. A massive relief army marches to save them. It fails. Behind the walls, the people of Alesia begin to starve. Vercingetorix makes a decision no one asks of him. He rides out alone, lays down his weapons at Caesar's feet, and offers his own life in exchange for his people's freedom.
