Why Objectives Matter More Than Kills in Narrative Wargames

Most tabletop wargames reward players for destroying the enemy. But what happens when the objective matters more than the casualties? In this third instalment of the Narrative Wargaming series, we explore how meaningful objectives transform ordinary battles into memorable stories. Using a real mission from the Gharadon Reach campaign, eight Space Marine Scouts launch a desperate night raid against an enemy airfield. Their task isn't to destroy the defenders. It's to cripple the enemy's ability to fight the battles that come afterwards. By the end of the mission only a single scout remains alive. Yet the raid succeeds. This episode examines why objectives create more interesting decisions, how narrative consequences carry forward into future games, and why some of the most memorable battles are those where victory cannot be measured by casualties alone. Topics covered include: • Narrative gaming • Scenario design • Mission objectives • Campaign consequences • Space Marine Scout raids • Rogue Trader style gaming • Warhammer 40K narrative play • The Gharadon Reach campaign • Asymmetric scenarios • Creating memorable tabletop battles Whether you play Warhammer 40,000, Rogue Trader, Necromunda, Imperial Commander, Laserburn, One Page Rules or any other tabletop wargame, the principles discussed here can help create more immersive and memorable games.
