At the invitation of King Philippe, Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako paid an official state visit to Belgium from Tuesday, June 23 through Thursday, June 25, in celebration of 150 years of bilateral relations between Japan and Belgium. The state visit began on Wednesday at Place des Palais in Brussels, in front of the Royal Palace. There, the Imperial Couple was welcomed by the Belgian Royal Couple. Following the playing of the Japanese national anthem (Kimigayo) and the Belgian national anthem (La Brabançonne), a small military parade took place, led by the Royal Band and followed by marching units of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Medical Service. After a reception at the Royal Palace, the delegation travelled in one large motorcade to Brussels City Hall, where the Imperial Couple was welcomed by the Mayor of Brussels. Following visits to Parliament and the Prime Minister in Rue de la Loi, the day concluded with a state banquet at the Royal Castle of Laeken, where the nearby Japanese Tower and Chinese Pavilion can also be found.
