20 Charges, One Case: Is Hanan & Wife’s Legal Battle Collapsing or Strengthening? | Matters Arising

Former NAFCO CEO Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba and his wife are facing 20 criminal charges tied to alleged financial misconduct, including theft, fraud, abuse of office, and money laundering involving tens of millions of cedis. The couple were recently re-arrested and returned to court after earlier proceedings, with prosecutors introducing fresh evidence that significantly expanded the case. The Attorney General’s office maintains that the charges stem from multiple transactions resulting in alleged financial loss to the state, while the defence is challenging the re-arrest and raising concerns over procedure and fairness. According to Amanda Akuokor Clinton, Lawyer and Head of Chambers at Clinton Consultancy, the earlier charges centred on procurement breaches, unauthorised payments, and causing financial loss to the state, while the new charges focus more on criminal intent, conspiracy, and fraud-related conduct. The case has sparked sharp political reactions. Alfred Thompson, National Treasurer Aspirant of the NPP, argues that the volume of charges could weaken the case, describing it as politically motivated persecution rather than justice. In contrast, Lom Nuku Ahlijah, Lawyer, Lecturer and Energy Analyst, says the Attorney General is within legal rights to amend charges and that the accused have the opportunity to defend themselves in court, adding that the process reflects accountability. Donkor Fuseini also supports the prosecution’s approach, urging separation of politics from judicial matters, noting that the Attorney General’s actions align with efforts to recover state funds and secure possible convictions in ongoing corruption-related cases. #mattersarising #politics #Corruption
