Take classes with me - https://reasonio.teachable.com/ In this twenty-eighth installment of our quarterly series, Philosophers in the Midst of History, I discuss the life, thought, and influence of the Ancient philosopher Diogenes of Sinope, one of the key figures in and possibly the founder of the Cynic school of philosophy. We look at his historical situation in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, his residences in Athens and Corinth, his practice and understanding of Cynic philosophy, and some of the stories that are told about him. We also discuss the historical problem of whether Antisthenes, an Athenian student of Socrates, or Diogenes should be regarded as the founder of the Cynic school, different understandings of what Cynicism involved in ancient and in modern times, and different points of view on Diogenes.
