Let's Type Face-Off from COMPUTE!'s Gazette (1986) | Commodore 64 Air Hockey Done Right
In this video, I type in Face-Off, an air hockey game published in the January 1986 issue of COMPUTE!'s Gazette. Along the way, we'll debug a few errors that even the magazine's proofreader missed before sitting down to play the finished game. Face-Off is a fast, competitive air hockey game written by Commodore 64 veterans Kevin Mykytyn and Mark Tuttle. Using a clever combination of BASIC and machine language, they produced an impressively polished program, and we'll take a closer look at one elegant programming technique that improves on a classic C64 input routine. Along the way, we'll also explore the history of air hockey, early hockey video games, and why COMPUTE!'s Gazette became one of the premier magazines for Commodore 64 enthusiasts.
