Polesia Czar - The Spell of Polesye
The only song in Polish from the album Jewish Folksongs from the Shtetl of Olga Mieleszczuk. Olga Mieleszczuk: vocal, Daniel Hoffman: violin, Ittay Binnun: saz, Ofer Malchin: accordion, Yehonatan Levi: contrabass This album is inspired by the musical biography, narrative and repertoire of Mariam Nirenberg, a Jewish folk singer born in the Polesye borderland region of Poland, now Belarus. Mariam Nirenberg remembered from her teens: "When we got together we had a gramophone with a big horn. There was only one in our shtetl. We would dance {..} waltz, Charleston, tango, polka, foxtrot". I imagine them dancing to this Polish tango about Polesye written by J.A.Kostecki in 1927. here translation of the part of lyrics: Between meadows, deep forests and marshes Gloomy folk are living A bevy of bees is buzzing above the swamps Wagon is creaking through a slushy river. Sometimes the scream of elk is heard somewhere, Or the wild scram of wood grouse in the bush And then silence again, silence like a still soul Reflecting the beautiful dream of Polesye. The spell of Polesye in wild bushes and marshes, The spell of Polesye in the dismal howl of gale When in the gloomy night, mists are rising from swamps, My heart is trembling, a strange fear is grasping me, And I'm hearing wailing in deep waters, The simple heart believes in the miracle of Polesye.
