Billed as a WR attempt with just about everybody who was anybody(except Coe),including current WR holder Steve Ovett,USA miler Byers,there to pace the field through a fast time set off perfectly.Unfortunately everyone else got lost in a tactical race and he just kept going! Even Ovett's famed last lap kick couldn't quite catch Byers,who came home for a deserved victory and instant sporting fame.
