Hertha BSC – Eintracht Braunschweig Highlights 2. Bundesliga, 13. Spieltag | Sportschau Fußball
Hertha BSC continued their winning streak in the 2. Bundesliga with a mixed performance against Eintracht Braunschweig, securing their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions and climbing significantly in the standings. The Berliners last achieved such a run in 2001. Marten Winkler scored the only goal of the evening in the 56th minute, scoring the only goal after a fine assist from Fabian Reese. Braunschweig, with their fourth consecutive defeat, slips into the relegation zone. Eintracht coach Heiner Backhaus, who received public support from sporting director Benjamin Kessel during the international break, is now under even more pressure. Both sets of fans remained silent in protest against the planned security measures for German stadiums. Only in the 8th minute did the attack face a major test when Braunschweig's center-back Patrick Nkoa, completely unmarked at the far post, failed to hit the empty net. The Berliners, who had gone into the international break with four consecutive wins in all competitions and could have played with corresponding confidence, remained completely harmless in the first half. Diego Demme, who had replaced the 16-year-old super-talent Kennet Eichhorn in the starting lineup, was often familiar with Berlin's build-up play – but apart from the occasional long ball into the path of the industrious Fabian Reese, he couldn't come up with anything to bypass Braunschweig's dense midfield. Before the match, he had raved in a Sky interview about his team's newfound self-confidence and the resulting "flow," but against the surprisingly strong Braunschweig side, nothing was going to come easily. It required painstaking work, creating opportunities through sheer grit and determination. And, as so often, Reese delivered: In the 27th minute, he dribbled his way through the Braunschweig defense on the left and found the unmarked Marten Winkler with a cross, whose header at least provided Berlin's first shot on goal. Reese continued to weave his way into the opposing penalty area, but each time too many Braunschweig legs stood in the way of dangerous shots. On the other end, center-back Marton Dardai made a last-ditch clearance to deny Sidi Sané a clear shot on goal (35th minute), and Christian Conteh, after a strong dribble, chipped the ball from a tight angle over Hertha goalkeeper Tjark Ernst, but just wide of the far post (45+1). The second half picked up right where the first had left off. Berlin tried hard, but Braunschweig were disciplined and clever enough to keep them away from their own goal. It was a moment of brilliance from Reese that finally brought Hertha the breakthrough: The captain created space for himself on the left wing with a feint and delivered a perfect cross into the box, which Winkler converted with Hertha's second shot on goal of the evening to make it 1-0. After conceding the goal, Eintracht Braunschweig lost their previously well-organized defense. Misplaced passes and positional errors repeatedly invited Hertha to counter-attack, and unnecessary fouls led to good free-kick opportunities. Braunschweig's Mehmet Aydin was fortunate in the 65th minute not to receive his second yellow card in two minutes after an overly aggressive tackle. After a handball penalty was awarded, Braunschweig almost had a golden opportunity to equalize late in the game (88th minute), but referee Bacher reversed his decision after reviewing the VAR footage. It was the right call; Linus Gechter was indeed struck on the elbow, but his arm was close to his chest. Braunschweig's Mehmet Aydin was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card in two minutes after an overzealous tackle. Starting lineups: Hertha BSC: Ernst - Gechter, Leistner, M. Dardai, Karbownik - Demme, Seguin, Reese, Cuisance, Winkler - Schuler Coach: Stefan Leitl Eintracht Braunschweig: R. Hoffmann - Ehlers, Nkoa, Frenkert - Aydin, S.
