In fact, this cafe is on the second floor of the wedding venue "El Celmo Kagoshima," and it's a "hidden gem for super cheap lunches"! The restaurant is very busy right after opening at 11:30 a.m. The menu only has one type of lunch, the daily special. The menu for this day was "Pork and Cheese Sandwich Cutlet." The 500 yen lunch, limited to 40 meals, sold out within 30 minutes of opening. The head chef of "El Celmo Kagoshima", Masakazu Hagiwara, is responsible for this extremely popular lunch. The reason they can offer lunch for 500 yen is because "El Celmo Kagoshima" is a wedding hall, and they can purchase ingredients in bulk for wedding receptions and banquets on weekends. Because it is for weddings, they use all the good ingredients and include different genres such as Japanese, Western, Chinese, and ethnic cuisine so that customers will not get bored regardless of genre. Another reason for its popularity is the "high quality food" made by the staff who prepare the food for wedding receptions. Lunch is prepared by five chefs, and the head chef does a final check on the taste. Hagiwara says that even though it's 500 yen, they never cut corners. For example, they make carrots into a slightly sweet side dish called "carrot glacé" by boiling them in butter, bouillon, and sugar, and they don't use strong seasonings, but rather pay careful attention to the subtle amounts of salt and sugar so that the food tastes the same from start to finish. El Celmo Kagoshima's 500 yen lunch has been going for about 15 years, and Hagiwara took it over from the previous head chef. Why would a wedding venue offer such a cheap lunch?
