Here, a wild olive (Olea europaea 'sylvestris') is used. ················································································· THE RIGHT SUBSTRATE MIX Not everything labeled "bonsai soil" actually is bonsai soil! We always tell our customers this, and they are always grateful for the accurate information. Many garden centers advertise "bonsai soil," which, upon closer inspection, is nothing more than TKS 2. This soil contains too much humus and is unsuitable for bonsai cultivation. In particular, it quickly leads to waterlogging, resulting in root rot. The tree is then usually beyond saving. Besides pure humus soil, heavy clay soil is just as harmful, and this is often the type of soil in which plants imported from Thailand, China, or Korea are found. Clay soil should also be removed as soon as possible, and the tree planted in well-draining substrate. (Note: Clay soil should not be confused with Akadama, which is fired clay.) Instead of buying "bonsai soil" from a garden center, we recommend mixing your own substrate according to the specific tree species. Most plants can be planted in our tried-and-tested mixture of Akadama, Lava, and a handful of Kanuma. Azaleas, on the other hand, should be planted in pure Kanuma, and pines in a mixture of Kyriu and Akadama. One advantage of this substrate is its excellent drainage. Waterlogging and root rot are virtually impossible. Thanks to its permeability, the roots also develop well in this substrate. However, please note that watering must be done differently when using this type of substrate!
