Kington Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Herefordshire, and around 20 miles northwest of Hereford, is the town of Kington. Geographically, Kington is situated along the River Arrow, and around two miles east of the England-Wales border. However, it lies to the west of Offa's Dyke, which would imply that it was Welsh from around the 8th century when the historic natural border was drawn up by King Offa of Mercia. In 1055 the Welsh advanced eastwards and attacked Hereford. Harold Godwinson retaliated by pushing the Welsh back as far as Radnor, and in doing so, the settlement here became English, and whose name is believed to be a reference to the aforementioned King Harold II. During the Norman era, Kington Castle was built, presumably to help secure the England-Wales border. The castle was destroyed in the early 13th century as part of the Braose Wars, which arose from land disputes between King John and the wealthy de Braose family who held a particular level of influence over the Welsh Marches during this period. Just northwest of the town centre is the Parish Church of St Mary. This dates from circa 1300, albeit with various alterations. The church is Grade I listed. During the 13th century Kington was effectively relocated away from the hilltop castle and church, and moved next to the River Arrow, from which point it became a wool-trading market town on an important drover's road. In 1857 a railway station opened in Kington. A second station opened in 1875 as a replacement to the original. This formed part of a line between the villages of New Radnor in Wales and Eardisley in England. The station closed to passengers in 1955, and to goods in 1964. Today, public transport to Kington consists of direct buses from Hereford, Llandrindod Wells, Presteigne, Knighton and various other nearby locations. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
