Loving Greece in the Age of Revolution: Philhellenism and Greek Independence

Tune in to the third event in our virtual series celebrating Greece’s Bicentennial: "Philhellenism Through The Ages." In this discussion, UIC's Professor Young Richard Kim and Roderick Beaton, Emeritus Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language, and Literature at King’s College London, explore the perseverance of Greek language and culture under Ottoman occupation, the development of philhellenic ideals in Europe and beyond in the eighteenth century, and the active role that Philhellenes played in lead up to and during the Revolution. "Philhellenism Through The Ages" is presented by the Classics and Mediterranean Studies Department at the University of Illinois Chicago, the Embassy of Greece in the USA, HALC, the Metropolis of Chicago, the Foundation for Hellenic Studies, Illinois, and the Consulate General of Greece in Chicago.
