Anyone who truly wants to understand their electricity consumption doesn't need expensive consultations or energy advisors – just a measuring device costing €20 and two weeks of their time. According to the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), the average household in Germany consumes around 3,500 kilowatt-hours per year, which, at an average electricity price of 37 cents at the beginning of 2026, corresponds to an annual bill of approximately €1,300. Those still on basic supply tariffs pay even more than 42 cents per kilowatt-hour, according to the Federal Network Agency – that's up to €1,500 annually, just for electricity. The German Federal Environment Agency estimates that standby operation alone accounts for around 360 kilowatt-hours per year in the average German household – at current electricity prices, that's between €115 and €135 flowing out of the household without any conscious use. A simple energy cost meter costing between €15 and €25 makes this invisible consumption visible for the first time: plug in the device, enter the current electricity price, and the display shows watts, kilowatt-hours, and annual costs in real time. The results of a two-week household energy audit show that the biggest energy guzzlers are rarely the devices you'd expect. An older cable receiver, permanently connected to the mains, consumes over 11 watts continuously – that equates to more than 90 kilowatt-hours and almost €34 per year for a device that's only used for maybe two hours a day. A game console in standby mode uses 7 to 9 watts continuously, and a fully automatic coffee machine that isn't switched off after making your morning coffee costs up to €40 per year just for keeping the coffee warm. The most expensive single item found in this test was a second refrigerator from 2009, used as a beverage cooler in the basement. After 48 hours of continuous measurement, the meter showed a projected annual consumption of around 320 kilowatt-hours – at €0.37 per kilowatt-hour, that's almost €120 per year for a device whose contents would easily fit in the main refrigerator. According to the German Energy Agency, household appliances manufactured before 2012 often consume twice as much energy as modern appliances, and the payback period for a new appliance in such cases is often less than five years. The nighttime base load of a typical household, measured at midnight with all devices in their usual standby mode, was between 80 and 100 watts in this experiment. Eight hours of sleep at 90 watts results in 0.72 kilowatt-hours per night – extrapolated to a year, that's 263 kilowatt-hours and almost €100 flowing while no one is switching anything on. Receivers, game consoles, and printers alone account for over 20 watts of this base load and could be completely eliminated with switchable power strips. The specific measures implemented after the audit – connecting the receiver, console, printer, Wi-Fi repeater, and fully automatic coffee machine to switchable power strips for a total of €35, and switching off the old secondary refrigerator – result in estimated annual savings of €180 to €220. The measuring device had thus paid for itself in just over a month. Anyone wanting to go further than these savings should also check their electricity tariff. Existing customers will pay an average of 32.8 cents per kilowatt-hour in May 2026, while new customers can currently find tariffs starting at 24 to 25 cents – a difference of almost 8 cents. With an annual consumption of 3,500 kilowatt-hours, this equates to a difference of over 270 euros, which can be achieved by switching providers without touching a single device. Reducing consumption by 15 to 20 percent through a measuring device and behavioral changes also alters the basis for planning a photovoltaic system: A smaller system suffices, the amortization period decreases, and the self-consumption rate increases – because less base load means that more solar power is used directly instead of being fed into the grid at a low feed-in tariff.
