Bosra, Syria: One City. Six Civilizations. 3,300 Years of History [4K]

Bosra sits in Southern Syria, hear the Jordanian border, and holds layers of history rarely found together in one place: Nabatean origins, Roman provincial capital, Byzantine church center, early Islamic rule under the Umayyads, and later Ayyubid and Mamluk fortification. Six civilizations, one city, roughly 3,300 years. The city if built almost entirely from black basalt stone, giving its ruins a distinct look compared to the pale limestone seen elsewhere in the Roman world. Its best preserved landmark is the Roman theatre—one of the most intact in existence—which the Ayyubids later fortified into a citadel, encasing the theatre inside defensive walls for protection during the Crusades. In this video, we walk through Bosra's ancient streets, mosques, Roman columns, the Nabatean arch, the Triumphal Arch of Trajan, the southern Roman baths, the citadel, and the theatre itself.
