La DESASTROSA actuación del TRI en ARGENTINA 1978 🏆 ¿Realmente eran TAN MALOS? 😔
The 1978 World Cup in Argentina is etched as one of the most painful chapters in the history of the Mexican National Team. Under the leadership of José Antonio Roca, El Tri arrived with very high expectations, but ended up delivering its worst World Cup performance: three losses in three matches, zero points, and ten goals conceded. With important players like Leonardo Cuéllar, Cristóbal Ortega, Ignacio Flores, Víctor Rangel, and a young Hugo Sánchez, Mexico never truly managed to compete in a group that ultimately became a nightmare. The opening match seemed to offer hope. Against Tunisia, Mexico went into halftime with a lead thanks to a penalty converted by Arturo Vázquez in the 45th minute. However, everything fell apart in the second half. The Africans responded with three goals, not only overturning the score but also securing the first victory for an African team in World Cup history. Mexico lost 3-1 and let a crucial opportunity slip away. The second match brought the hardest blow. Against West Germany, one of the tournament's powerhouses, El Tri was completely outmatched. They were already down by four goals in the first half and never found a way back into the game. The final score, a resounding 6-0, went down as one of the most painful defeats in Mexican football history. With elimination practically a certainty, Mexico closed out their participation against Poland. Although Víctor Rangel managed to briefly tie the game at the start of the second half, the Europeans regained control and sealed the victory with a final score of 3-1. In the end, Mexico bowed out as the worst team in the tournament, without a single point and with an alarming goal difference. Argentina 1978 not only produced poor results; it also exposed the footballing deficiencies of a team that fell far short of international standards. This World Cup continues to be remembered as El Tri's lowest point in a World Cup. But it's also worth looking at this story from another perspective. That squad was brimming with talent, and several of those players would go on to become icons of Mexican football. Perhaps, with a different approach, better decisions, or greater stability, that generation could have shown a much more competitive side. However, fate was cruel: Mexico didn't even qualify for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, and by the time of Mexico 1986, many of them were no longer at their peak or had fallen out of favor. Argentina 1978 wasn't just a sporting failure; it also marked the beginning of the end for a generation that perhaps deserved a better send-off.
