Unlike David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix had a very short career (4 years, 3 studio albums, 1 official live album) before his untimely death at the age of 27. However, those 4 albums are jam packed with hits. Are You Experienced? his first with The Jimi Hendrix Experience (drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding) contains gems like "Purple Haze" "Hey Joe" "The Wind Cries Mary" "Fire" and "Foxy Lady". Axis: Bold as Love saw the guitarist adding new lyricism with classics like "Spanish Castle Magic" "Little Wing" "If 6 was 9" "Castles Made of Sand" and "Bold as Love". The double album Electric Ladyland also contained hits like "Crosstown Traffic", but also pushed the boundaries of the 3-minute single with epics like "Voodoo Chile" (a jam with Jack Cassidy and Steve Winwood) "House Burning Down" "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and the iconic Bob Dylan cover "All Along the Watchtower". As the Experience disintegrated, Jimi recruited bassist Billy Cox and performed his famous Woodstock Festival set where he included a guitar instrumental version of "The Stars Spangled Banner". With his trademark feedback and whammy bar effects to simulate the sound of bombs and war, The National Anthem took on a different meaning with the height of the Vietnam War. With drummer Buddy Miles, Jimi cut the Band of Gypsys record with songs like "Power to Love" and perhaps his greatest guitar solo, "Machine Gun". His music often associated with drugs, LSD and marijuana, drugs would eventually claim his life in 1970 when he overdosed and died of asphyxia. Since his passing, there have been a seemingly endless number of posthumous releases, often attempting to recreate his unfinished 4th album like Cry of Love or First Rays of the New Rising Sun. Gems such as "Freedom" "Angel" "Dolly Dagger" and more recently "Valleys of Neptune" have become classics in their own right, while posthumous live releases from Winterland, The Fillmore East, The Hendrix Live in the West LP (featuring a 13-minute version of "Red House") really display the fire his live performances exuded. Give this playlist a listen and celebrate the man who revolutionized the electric guitar!
