In a time when much of the conversation around Rastafari has been reduced to appearance, fashion, or diet, it’s important to remember that Rastafari has always been far deeper than locks, colors, or Ital food. At its core, Rastafari has historically represented knowledge of self, African history, resistance to oppression, social consciousness, spiritual awareness, and the courage to challenge systems of injustice. For many of us growing up, Rastafari wasn’t simply a lifestyle it was a source of reasoning, critical thinking, and intellectual liberation. It encouraged people to question what they were taught, study history for themselves, and engage in meaningful discussions about culture, identity, politics, and humanity. That’s one of the reasons I continue to appreciate Mutabaruka. Whether you agree with every position he takes or not, he remains one of the few voices still willing to provoke thought, challenge narratives, and stretch the minds of the people. In an era of short attention spans and surface-level conversations, his commitment to reasoning and public discourse feels increasingly rare. To me, Mutabaruka represents a tradition that seems to be fading a generation of cultural commentators, thinkers, and Rastafari elders who saw their role not merely as entertainers, but as educators and defenders of historical memory. Kudos to Mutabaruka for continuing to stand firm in that space and for reminding us that knowledge, dialogue, and critical thinking still matter.
