A Self-Contained Military Force: Canadian Corps Tramway Companies in WW1 | Bradley Shoebottom

In this talk Bradley Shoebottom explores how tramways were an effective way of moving ammunition, supplies and evacuating casualties in the forward battle area across shell torn earth during the First World War. After starting tramways as local initiatives by British divisions in 1915, the Canadian Corps realised their utility and sought a permanent organisational solution with their own self-contained 1st and 2nd Canadian Tramway Companies in November 1917. This presentation explores the events leading up to their creation, where they operated on the Western Front, and how they significantly improved the movement of supplies.
