Wazirabad - History & Documentary of Wazirabad - وزیرآباد - वजीराबाद का इतिहास - Zia ul Mustafa Wazirabad, located in Punjab, Pakistan, is a city with a rich historical tapestry that spans several centuries. Mughal Era Origins The city's origins trace back to the Mughal period. While some accounts suggest that Wazirabad was initially settled in 1542, it was during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century that the city began to take shape. Hakim Ilm-ud-din, also known as Wazir Khan, a prominent minister of Shah Jahan, is credited with founding the city in 1636. He constructed the first significant residential building, Musamman Burj (locally known as Saman Burj), on the bank of the Palkhu Nala, marking the establishment of Wazirabad as a notable settlement . Sikh and British Periods In the mid-18th century, around 1760, Charat Singh, the grandfather of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, took control of Wazirabad. Later, in 1809, Maharaja Ranjit Singh incorporated the town into his empire and appointed General Paolo Avitabile, an Italian officer in his service, as the Nazim (administrator) of the city. Avitabile is credited with redesigning the city, introducing a straight, broad bazaar with side streets at right angles, a layout that influenced the city's development . Under British colonial rule, Wazirabad gained prominence as a key administrative and military center. The British established a military cantonment in the city, which was later moved to Sialkot in 1855. The municipality of Wazirabad was created in 1867, and the city became an important junction on the North-Western Railway. The Alexandra Railway Bridge, opened in 1876, connected Wazirabad across the Chenab River and was considered an engineering marvel of its time . Industrial Significance Wazirabad is renowned for its cutlery industry, earning it the nickname "City of Cutlery." The city's artisans have a longstanding reputation for producing high-quality knives, swords, and other metal goods. The nearby town of Nizamabad, within a mile of Wazirabad, is particularly famed for its weapon manufacturing . Cultural and Historical Landmarks The city houses several historical structures, including the Musamman Burj and the Shesh Mahal, built during Emperor Aurangzeb's reign in 1705. These buildings reflect the architectural heritage of the Mughal era. Additionally, Wazirabad is associated with Sikh history; Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, is believed to have stayed in the area during his travels to Kashmir in 1620, and a Gurudwara was constructed in his memory . Modern Developments In recent years, Wazirabad has continued to grow, both in population and infrastructure. As of the 2023 census, the city's population stands at approximately 128,060, with the broader district housing nearly 993,412 residents . The city remains a vital industrial and commercial hub in the region, maintaining its historical significance while progressing into the modern era.
