Recognising Green Skills in Makerspaces in Africa - Part 2 Workshop 25 June 2026

Green Skills are badly needed across African countries for the world's transition to a sustainable future. We see makerspaces as part of the solution - as local hubs for learning, technology and regeneration. This workshop helps African makerspace leaders to learn about and to collaboratively create open Digital Badges to better recognise the skills in African makerspace communities and to increase job prospects and livelihoods. It focuses on recognising Green Skills that makers and makerspace leaders have already developed - skills in, for example, plastic recycling, solar energy, sustainable materials, waste management solutions, sustainable materials, energy efficiency, eco-design and more. Trainers are leaders from the Open Recognition and the Recognising Prior Learning movements, Don Presant from Canada and Catherine Wanjira Maina from Kenya with host facilitator Andrew Lamb from the UK. You will discover Digital Badges, learn to design them and then make them - ready to issue to makerspace community members! The Digital Badges will be recognised and promoted by the Makerspaces Africa association, the Internet of Production Alliance and the UNDP Timbuktoo Programme's UniPod network. After this trial initiative, these organisations will work with African makerspace leaders to develop more Digital Badges to recognise a wider array of skills - potentially covering all aspects of a maker's education.
