Scientists Finally Solved The Slavs Origin Mystery — DNA Revealed The Truth In 2019, an Indian professor in Delhi took a DNA test and found 18% Eastern European ancestry — with no European relatives in living memory. The answer reaches back 5,800 years to the Pontic Steppe. The Slavs are the largest ethno-linguistic group in Europe — 350 million people across 13 countries, stretching from the Pacific coast of Russia to the German border. Yet before the 6th century CE, they barely appear in historical records. Then in 2015, a team led by Wolfgang Haak at Max Planck sequenced ancient DNA from 94 skeletal remains spanning 8,000 to 3,000 years ago and found something that rewrote European prehistory entirely. Between 4,500 and 5,000 years ago, the Neolithic farming cultures of Europe — the people who built Stonehenge — nearly vanished from the genetic record, replaced by a massive wave of migrants from the Pontic Steppe.
