Seismologist Bruno Collaço, from the Seismology Center of the University of São Paulo (USP), explains that the Earth is in constant motion and registers dozens of earthquakes every day. According to the expert, the fact that two large tremors occurred within minutes of each other is merely a coincidence. "The Earth is a living planet, with internal dynamics. The surface is in constant motion and transformation, and these phenomena do not necessarily have any relation," he said. While Venezuela faces high levels of destruction and difficulties in responding to the catastrophe, Japan has a highly prepared structure to deal with earthquakes. In the country, the question is not if a major tremor will happen, but when. Therefore, the population regularly participates in simulations that recreate real situations, including evacuations, fire risks, and procedures to be adopted in the first minutes after an earthquake. Experts emphasize that many victims do not die from the tremor itself, but from falling objects and other secondary hazards. This is why Japan invests heavily in prevention, conducting simulations, and preparing the population for the first 72 hours after a disaster.
