THE KHOJALY MASSACRE — A DARK PAGE OF HISTORY On the night of February 25–26, 1992, one of the bloodiest tragedies in modern history took place in the town of Khojaly in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. During the attack carried out by Armenian armed forces and elements of the former Soviet 366th Regiment, more than 600 Azerbaijani Turkish civilians lost their lives, over a thousand people were taken captive, and tens of thousands were forced to flee their homes. This video was prepared to document that night and the events that followed. Nagorno-Karabakh became the center of tensions between Armenians and Azerbaijanis during the collapse of the Soviet Union. The conflicts that began in 1988 turned into open war after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. While Armenian forces attempted to annex the region, Azerbaijan sought to defend its territorial integrity. Khojaly held major strategic importance because it was home to Karabakh’s only civilian airport. The town, with a population of around 7,000 mostly Azerbaijani residents, had been under blockade since late 1991. Food, fuel, electricity, and medical supplies were almost completely cut off. The population endured months of hunger, cold, and isolation. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, a serious power vacuum emerged in the region. Parts of the former Soviet 366th Motorized Regiment and heavy weaponry joined or supported Armenian forces. This made the use of tanks and heavy artillery possible during the assault on Khojaly. On the night of February 25, the town was attacked from multiple directions and subjected to intense shelling. Khojaly’s defenses were extremely weak. By the morning of February 26, the defensive lines had collapsed completely, and residents attempted to flee toward the Azerbaijani-controlled city of Agdam. However, the escape routes were also under fire. Near Nakhchivanik, fleeing civilians were attacked in snowy forested areas. Among the victims were women, children, and elderly people. Later, journalists and rescue workers arriving from Agdam discovered hundreds of bodies lying on the snow. The images quickly spread around the world and caused international shock. According to official figures, 613 civilians were killed, including 106 women and 83 children. Another 487 people were injured, 1,275 were taken captive, and most of the town’s population was displaced from their homeland. The Khojaly Massacre is not only a tragedy for the Azerbaijani people but also a shared wound for all humanity. Speaking openly about these dark pages of history and preserving the truth is essential in preventing similar tragedies in the future. As we honor the memory of the 613 innocent victims of Khojaly, we must continue to uphold hope for a world built on peace and justice. True peace can only be achieved by confronting the past and ensuring justice.
