Fetine, a Muslim woman from Cyprus, was forced into marriage at the age of 14 in 1936 to a stranger who took her far from her home in Cyprus to Palestine—never to be seen again. Her story echoes that of countless young women in Cyprus during the British Colonial era, particularly between the 1920s and 1950s, a period when many families were trapped in extreme poverty. For these women, arranged marriages often meant a life of uncertainty and loss, with many never returning to their families or homeland. Pembe Mentesh, an Australian-born Cypriot, is determined to break the silence surrounding her great aunt Fetine’s mysterious marriage.
