Carpal Tunnel Anatomy - Clinical Skills - Dr Gill In order to understand Carpal tunnel syndrome it is vital to understand the anatomy of the carpal tunnel, from its contents of the ligaments of the intrinsic muscles of the hand, through to the bones of the carpal tunnel, to the route of the median nerve. By understanding the relatively simple course of the median nerve it is easy to understand the numbness and tingling sensations which people report when they suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome Similarly, that course of the median nerve explains why there is weakness of the hand, particularly the thumb when there is compression of the median nerve if there is narrowing of the carpal tunnel.
