For better or for worse, our history was marked by the arrival of the Spanish. From these conquerors we inherited various constructions that were impregnated with the sweat and blood of the natives, among them the haciendas. The history of these dates back to the arrival of Hernán Cortés, responsible for introducing sugar cane in Mexico. After the conquest, King Carlos I of Spain granted Cortés the title of Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca, which gave him a large area of ​​land and, therefore, power over other peoples. In Morelos, he founded the first mills that were farms in which sugar cane was processed to produce mainly sugar and alcohol. The warm climate of the region allowed the sugar industry to flourish and while the Spanish Crown earned great income, the indigenous people were exploited to work in them. The work was so heavy in some of them that Cortés used slaves from the Antilles, as was the case of the Hacienda de San Antonio Atlacomulco. These haciendas witnessed important events and even triggered the uprising of the peasants led by Emiliano Zapata during the Mexican Revolution, as the revolutionary argued that the lands should be returned to the peasants from whom they had been taken away. Many of these haciendas became barracks during the revolution, they were deteriorated and some abandoned.
