Former World Headquarters Director Yoon Young-ho, who engaged in illegal lobbying for the purpose of soliciting favors regarding the church's pending issues, has finally faced legal judgment. The Supreme Court has confirmed prison sentences for Jeon Seong-bae, a Buddhist monk indicted on charges of conspiring with Kim Kun-hee, the spouse of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, to accept bribes and requests from the Unification Church regarding pending church issues, and for Yoon Young-ho, the former World Headquarters Director who handed over the money to them. The Supreme Court’s Third Division has upheld the lower court’s ruling sentencing Mr. Jeon to five years in prison and a fine of approximately 180 million won for charges including brokering bribery under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, and former Director Yoon Young-ho to one year and six months in prison for charges including violations of the Political Funds Act. Jeon Seong-bae was indicted on charges including conspiring with Ms. Kim Kun-hee to receive valuables worth approximately 80 million won, such as a Chanel bag and a Graff diamond necklace, from former Director Yoon in 2022 in exchange for soliciting support for the religious organization. Both the first and second trial courts found him guilty of all these charges. Former Director Yoon was brought to trial on charges of handing over money to Mrs. Kim Kun-hee through Mr. Jeon; he was sentenced to one year and two months in prison in the first trial, but his sentence was increased to one year and six months in the second trial. This Supreme Court ruling holds great significance in that the judiciary has determined the Unification Church's collusion between church and state to be a grave crime that undermines the constitutional value of the separation of church and state. Previously, the appellate court explained the reason for the increased sentence, stating, "The nature of the crime is egregious as it undermines the separation of church and state and involves the President and his spouse, whose integrity is emphasized," and adding that "the crime in this case seriously obstructed the fair execution of national policies." As judicial authorities crack down on crimes that violate the principle of the separation of church and state, attention is also focusing on the investigation into the corruption allegations regarding the collusion between Shincheonji and church, which is gaining momentum following the arrest of leader Lee Man-hee and his second-in-command.
