England's women's national football team has defended its European Championship title. The team, coached by the successful Sarina Wiegman, defeated world champions Spain 3-1 on penalties in Sunday's final of the tournament in Switzerland. In the end, it was Chloe Kelly again who converted the decisive penalty, just as she had against Germany in 2022. For the German national team, the tournament ended in the semi-finals against Spain. The tournament started quite successfully, however. The German women entered the European Championship with a victory, albeit at a high price. In their first match against Poland, captain Giulia Gwinn twisted her knee after about half an hour while making a save against Ewa Pajor. She tried to continue, but had to leave the field in tears after 40 minutes – a torn medial collateral ligament. The German national team thrilled fans in a gripping quarter-final against France. The team was reduced to ten players early on. In the penalty area, Kathrin Hendrich pulled a French player's hair and received a red card. With great passion, the team fought their way to a penalty shootout, which they won 6-5. The heroine of the match: Ann-Katrin Berger. The goalkeeper kept Germany in the game with an incredible save in extra time. In the decisive penalty shootout, she made two saves and even scored a penalty herself. Germany's dream of a ninth European Championship title was shattered in the semi-final against Spain. Coach Christian Wück's team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat after extra time. Spain's exceptional footballer, Aitana Bonmati, sealed the victory in the 113th minute in Zurich with a shot from a tight angle into the near corner, securing the win in the hard-fought semi-final.
