India has many problems other than ChatGPT, needs trained manpower: IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti

Responding to a recent statement made by Open AI founder Sam Altman, IIT-Madras Director V Kamakoti said that India has more important issues to address than worry about fancy technology. He said, 'There are many more problems to be solved in India than ChatGPT. There are two types of computations, one is the fancy computation and the other is computation for solving real world problems. Forget what others have to say, I am talking about what India truly needs. India today needs well trained manpower in every field of engineering with a system thinking.' In an interview with ThePrint's Soniya Agrawal, the legacy IIT director also spoke about recent student suicides and mental health problems plaguing the campus. He said that through student surveys they had zeroed down on four issues as primary stress points-- personal, health, competition and financial issues. He also highlighted the student grievance redressal mechanism brought about by the institution. The director also spoke about the progress that IIT Madras has made in setting up its Tanzania campus.
