Do we regret moving to the south of france? The truth about our budget. #home #budget #immigrants
Honestly, moving from Brittany down to Quillan feels like changing countries sometimes. Up in Brittany, everything was… softer, you know? Grey skies, a bit of drizzle most days, that Atlantic wind that sneaks into your bones. Down here in Occitanie, it’s the opposite—blue skies, bright sun, and that dry heat in summer. And then the wind! The tramontane is something else entirely. Food-wise, it’s been a proper shift too. In Brittany, it was all about galettes, seafood, salted butter—simple but rich. Down here, it’s heartier, more rustic—think cassoulet, duck, local wines. You feel like meals take longer, and people really sit and enjoy them. The lifestyle is different as well. In Brittany, people felt a bit more reserved at first—friendly, but it takes time. Around Quillan, it’s warmer in every sense. People chat more easily, there’s that southern openness, a bit more spontaneity. Costs surprised me too. Property down here is generally cheaper than in coastal Brittany, especially away from the sea. But everyday life? It balances out—some things are cheaper, some not. Markets here are amazing though, and you can eat really well without spending a fortune. And then there’s the landscape—going from the ocean to the foothills of the Pyrenees… that’s a big change. I swapped waves for mountains, and honestly, I don’t miss the constant damp!
