June 22, 2026 "Jesus' Disciples Must Love One Another" John 13:34 I give you a new commandment, namely, that you love one another; Just as I have loved you, so you must love one another. Christians are commanded to love, in a more noble and special way, all other Christians regardless of group, church membership, or theological views. Believers must distinguish genuine Christians from those who only have false claims by examining their love and obedience to Christ and loyalty to God's holy Word (John 5:24; 8:31; 10:27; Matt. 7:21; Gal. 1:9). Everyone who has a living faith in Jesus Christ and remains faithful to God's Word, becomes our brother in Christ, and deserves our love and support. Loving all sincere Christians, including those from different church organizations, does not mean that we must compromise or reconcile our biblical beliefs or doctrinal differences. It also does not mean that we must strive for unity within our organizations. Christians must never compromise on God's holiness. Love for God and His will as revealed in the Bible must always govern and guide our love for our fellow believers. Love for God must always come first (John 13:35 and later; Matthew 23:37, 39). John 13:35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. Love (Greek: 'agape') should be the hallmark of Christ's followers (1 John 3:23; 4:7-21). This agape love is essentially self-giving and sacrificial love for the good of others (1 John 4:9-10). Thus, relationships between all believers should be characterized by a self-sacrificing concern for the ultimate happiness of their fellow believers. Christians should help one another in trials, be mindful of one another's feelings and reputations, and be willing to deny themselves to promote the well-being of their fellow believers (1 Corinthians 13:1-13; Galatians 6:2; 1 Thessalonians 4:9; 2 Thessalonians 1:3; 1 Peter 1:22; 2 Peter 1:7; 1 John 3:23).
