NOZ PECÃ - COMO PODAR.

The pecan (Carya illinoinensis) is a large tree in the walnut family, native to North America, cultivated in Brazil, mainly in the South and Southeast regions. In addition to its hardwood, it produces pecans, rich in oils, proteins, and minerals. It is a deciduous plant (it loses its leaves in winter), can reach up to 20–30 meters in height, and can live for over 100 years. 🌳 Why is pruning important? Pecan trees require formative and maintenance pruning to: Develop a balanced, well-ventilated canopy; Reduce competition from branches that would waste unnecessary energy; Facilitate light entry and harvesting; Prevent pest and disease problems. ✂️ Types of Pecan Pruning Formation Pruning (first 4–5 years) Choose a straight main trunk (central leader); Remove very low branches (up to 1.5 m from the ground) when grown directly in the ground, and if potted, remove all branches 0.50 cm from the ground; Leave 8 to 12 lateral branches evenly distributed in a spiral, every 20–30 cm in height; Cut branches that grow into the crown or cross each other. Cleaning or Maintenance Pruning (mature trees) Remove dead, diseased, or broken branches; Remove suckers (suckers) on the trunk and at the base; Keep the crown pyramidal or oval to allow for good light entry. Production Pruning (when already producing nuts) Should be light, only to open the crown; Don't remove too many productive branches, as walnut trees need ample leaf area to form fruit. 🕐 Ideal time to prune Perform pruning in late winter/early spring (before bud break), when the plant is dormant; Avoid drastic pruning during flowering or fruiting.
