The issue of lifestyle audits and vetting within the South African Police Services has shown its ugly face again. Revelations at the Madlanga Commission has shown that - despite widespread allegations of police corruption - SAPS conducted zero lifestyle audits over a five-year period. Anti corruption and governance expert Dr Albertus Schoeman told the Commission that only five of 823 top cops underwent lifestyle investigations, with all five being cleared. According to Dr Schoeman, investigators have no statutory powers to access financial records, as they rely on voluntary submissions from the person being audited. On vetting...
