The cost of nursing home fees for Alzheimer's patients is a real mess. Some families shouldn't pay, others should. And amidst doubts and uncertainties, the risk is that the most fragile elderly will be rejected by the facilities. In the regional council, the Democratic Party has submitted a question to Welfare Councilor Guido Bertolaso. The goal is to clarify the fees and the criteria for determining who qualifies for "high health integration," and therefore who can be exempted from paying the National Health Service. Rulings in recent months have established that in many cases the state must cover the fees. But without clear rules, nursing home fees are hesitant to accept new patients with Alzheimer's or dementia, for fear of litigation and not being reimbursed. Thus, families find themselves paying hefty fees or fighting in court for their rights. Bertolaso ​​announced that a census of residents in Lombardy and an analysis of their clinical needs are underway. The Regional Council's goal is to establish objective criteria by the end of 2025. If the national framework fails to clarify the parameters, the Region promises its own guidelines to avoid inequality and administrative chaos. Meanwhile, the system remains fragile: those who win in court don't pay, while others do. And families and nursing homes remain stuck in the middle, caught between uncertainty and the need to ensure care for the most vulnerable elderly.
