While Donald Trump had made this event a symbol of the return of American power, the president has yet to appear in any stadium, not even for the US team's first match. This absence can be explained: Donald Trump cultivates an image of victory and usually controls the setting of his public appearances. However, a football match is, by definition, unpredictable. A US defeat, hostile fans, or boos broadcast worldwide would constitute a political risk that would be difficult to control. But while Donald Trump remains away from the stands, he doesn't seem to be keeping a low profile of the competition. During the match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina, striker Folarin Balogun was sent off and suspended for the following match. Against all expectations, FIFA ultimately decided to lift this suspension on the eve of the round of 16. Donald Trump publicly thanked the organization, while several revelations have since suggested possible behind-the-scenes pressure. The intervention of political power in the running of a World Cup is reminiscent of rare historical precedents, notably the 1934 edition organized by Mussolini's fascist Italy. Is this simply a coincidence or a sign of the growing politicization of world football?
