Cinematic Conversations - at the 50th ITG Conference
Cinematic Conversations A Recital of Film Music for Trumpet and Piano Brian Shaw, trumpets and flugelhorn Paul Johnston, piano PROGRAM: Charlie Chaplin - "Smile" from Modern Times (1936) Henry Mancini - "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962) Jerry Goldsmith - Open Credits from Chinatown (1974) Johnny Mandel - "The Shadow of Your Smile" from The Sandpiper (1965) John Williams - "With Malice Toward None" from Lincoln (2012) Miles Davis "Florence sur les Champs-Elysees" from Ascenseur Pour l’echafaud (1958) Ennio Morricone - "Gabriel’s Oboe" from The Mission (1986) (dedicated to the memory of Ryan Anthony) Paul Williams - "The Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie (1979) This program is a setting of music from classic movies conceived as a single seamless/non-stop performance from start to finish. We had the opportunity to play our dress rehearsal in the beautiful Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music so I chose to weave in some that material into the video to showcase that space. (We had a small audience of curious trumpeters who had wandered in to the hall from other events at the conference that night so I thought it would be nice to include some of those performances as well.) "Brian Shaw and pianist Paul Johnston treated the audience to an eclectic and engaging performance Friday afternoon at Christ Church. In a program titled "Cinematic Conversations", Shaw moved effortlessly between musical styles while performing works by Henry Mancini, John Williams, Miles Davis, Ennio Morricone, and others. Seamlessly transitioning between B-flat and C trumpets, piccolo trumpet, and flugelhorn, Shaw captivated listeners with the program's unique design in which pieces were performed back-to-back, like an album or playlist, without pauses for applause. Shaw's beautiful, song-like trumpet playing was nothing short of remarkable."
