The Canal was opened in the year 1869 thus drastically reducing the distance between Europe and countries to the East of it! Approximately speaking, the canal has cut the travel time between Europe and Asia from 22 days to well under 22 hours, Prior to this, the ships had to go all the way around Africa to cover this distance! Taking the canal route saves the ships not just time, but also a lot of money in terms of fuel costs! But!... not all these savings are for free. The ships transiting the canal are supposed to pay a fee. Infact, a heavy fee! Just in the year 2020, around 19,000 ships crossd the the Suez Canal, and generated a total revenue of 5.9 billion USD! Actually, the fee which is to be paid is not a flat fee. It is calculated based on a variety of factors, for example, the type of ship, the Gross tonnage, the Net tonnage, the Suez Tonnage etc. All the calculations are done in advance by the SCA i.e. the Suez Canal Authority. Since I sail on container ship, so, I know for a fact that the charges also depend on the number of containers we are carrying, whether we're loaded with cargo or we're on ballast and so on. Anyway, so to find out how much the ship has to pay up, go to this website (link in description) and enter the relevant details. I'm going to fill out the details and information specific to my ship. Once that's done, just click on Calculate. You'll see the invoice with the grand total. Ours is a bit North of $300,000 - that is for one crossing! but there's also a 65% discount running these days, the reason for which is the slowdown in global economies due to the pandemic. As the global markets struggle and try to limp back to normal, there is not much cargo that needs delivery right now, and there has been a big slump in demand as well! So, many ship owners are contemplating the alternate routes i.e. all the way around Africa, and the discount from the Suez canal authorities to prevent the ship owners from doing so!
