Cordoba to Damascus: Multiple Identities of Architecture Ft. Pablo Funes

Can a single line trace the evolution of Islamic architecture from Cordoba to Damascus? Rooted in Late Antiquity, early Muslim architecture did not follow one path. It evolved in several convergent directions linking the Mediterranean and beyond. Have you ever wondered how a Corinthian capital transforms into the intricate ones of the Alhambra? How a lighthouse inspired the minaret? How polychrome voussoirs shaped the mihrab? Join us for a special session with Prof. Pablo Álvarez Funes, a London based architect whose career began in Seville and Madrid. He has developed an extraordinary knowledge of architectural precedent and has deep interests in traditional Spanish, Scottish, Mediterranean, and Islamic architecture and construction. His work spans designing and managing complex classical and traditional projects across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia. He also writes, lectures, and serves as the Director of the Classic Planning Academy. Funes founded the Spanish Chapter of INTBAU in 2012 and is currently engaged as a senior architect in London. In this session we will trace four key architectural shifts. From the Corinthian and composite capital to the Alhambra's unique forms. Minarets born from the Great Lighthouse of Alexandria. Polychrome voussoirs and the evolution of the mihrab. Come and be part of the conversation.
